EP 11: Putting the Spotlight on Women Making History with Elliana Welby
Numerous notable women have made their mark in the world but there are only a handful in traditional history education who get the recognition that they deserve.
In this episode, I’m joined by Elliana Welby, an 8th grader and a futsal player. Despite her youth, she's making giant steps towards gender equality. She realized that her history classes were not teaching in a gender-equitable fashion, so she took action. She founded the website womencreatinghistory.com - which aims to give anyone easy access to data on remarkable women.
I am so excited to have Elliana on The 6% podcast and learn more about her and her site. She’s included sections such as Nobel Prize winners, LGBTQ+ women, sports, science, and mathematics on her site, and already has more ideas in growing it.
Elliana and I talk about the challenges she’s encountered while creating this project, why gender equality still needs a huge cultural shift, and why it’s especially important for young girls to have other successful women to look up to.
Episode Highlights:
- The unsettling experience that pushed her to create her website
- Her first attempts and unapproved projects in motivating other girls
- How she turned her idea of an empowering website into reality
- The female political figure from history she’d love to talk to for 15 minutes
- Her advice to her 10-year-old self about being a woman
- What her classmate said that embarrassed her and almost made her quit
