S2 E7: Embracing Your Uniqueness with Jenny Chong
As a female working in an industry filled with men, you don’t necessarily have to fit in or blend into the crowd. This does not have to be a bad thing. You can turn it around and make it into something positive.
In this episode, I’m joined by Jenny Chong. Jenny is a mother, mentor, and a female leader. She is the Head of Innovation for the FinTech startup KogoPAY. I wanted to talk to Jenny because there’s a phenomenally small number of females working in the technology and investment banking space.
There were so many inspiring nuggets in this conversation. I personally would love to rewind it and take careful notes!
We talk about how her experiences in her formative years taught her to welcome change and develop a sense of adventure, why you need to nurture confidence in your own skills, life as a female minority of color, and much more.
Episode highlights:
- How she wanted to be a pilot and an archaeologist as a kid
- Racial discrimination she experienced as a child
- Being conscious of her British Singaporean accent
- How she moves to different roles to reinvent herself
- Adversity and how it fosters resilience
- The manager’s role of identifying the strengths of their people
- The importance of bringing your authentic self to work
- Three core principles employees should follow
- How having kids taught her patience and anger management
- Why the younger generation of women should adopt STEM more
- How women aren’t comfortable self-promoting
- Dealing with imposter syndrome as a successful woman
- Why women feel more imposter syndrome than men
- The biggest hurdles of her life and work
- Why it’s never too late to pivot in your career choice
- Advice she would give a woman who wants to work in her field
